Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS):
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or
Poly cystic ovarian disease is a condition in females ( during child bearing
ages 14 t0 44 years) that is caused due to higher than normal levels of male
hormones levels. This higher than normal level of male hormones
(androgens)results in irregular menstrual cycles and difficult to become
pregnant.Increased male sex hormones can result in abnormal hair growth in face
and other body parts. Some women experience scalp hair loss as well.Women with
PCOS tend to suffer from diabetes and cardiac issues.Hormonal imbalances due to
PCOS can largely be treated effectively with birth control medications and oral anti
diabetic drugs many a times.
Features of Polycystic ovarian
Syndrome
The main ovarian affecting hormones
are follicle stimulating hormone and leutinizing hormones(FSH and LH).FSH helps
in recruiting selected cells to become follicles maturing into ovum. When sperm comes into contact with a released
ovum in the fallopian tube, eggs gets fertilised. The release of matured ovum
into fallopian tube is under the influence of Leutinsisng hormone is also
termed ovulation.Certain imbalances results in non release of ovum, and the
ovary gets filled with fluid filled scas of unreleased eggs, which is a typical
feature of PCOS.The unreleased sacs produce male hormones androgens. These androgen
are the cause for the most of the clinical
problems with PCOD,namely skin alterations, acne, abnormal hair growth in face
and other parts, scalp hair loss and increased wait gain in some women.
